FiOS is Verizon's fairly new high speed fiber optic residential service. It differs from broadband and dialup service in that data is delivered to homes with FiOS through fiber optic cabling as opposed to the standard copper lines that many households use today. The bandwidth increases gained by delivering internet service through fiber optics are so significant that Verizon is also able to pipe High Definition Television service through those same fibers.
This allows Verizon, who has been a true mainstay in providing internet services, to branch out and compete with local cable companies by also providing homes access to their proprietary FiOSTV television service.
